Protesters March to National Assembly and Royal Palace

This morning, February 5th, villagers from urban poor communities around Phnom Penh joined Yorm Bopha in front of the US embassy at 8am. From there, they began marching towards the National Assembly where they planned to deliver a petition asking MPs to push the Minister of Justice to explain the arrests of the 19 activists.

As expected, they were stopped by security forces during the march near Wat Phnom. They called tuk-tuks to take them the rest of the way. Once everyone had reached the National Assembly, they rallied in front of the gates. Around 11:30am, CNRP representative H.E Ho Vann came out to accept the petition.

Afterwards, the demonstrators marched on to the Royal Palace to deliver another petition asking for the King’s intervention. At 12:15pm, a representative came to accept that petition as well. By 12:30pm, the crowd had dispersed.
